**********MY SISTER**********

AN ETERNAL, LOVING MEMORY ~ I stopped at the convenience store across the highway from the mobile home park I lived in on my way to a night shift on the USS John C. Calhoun in dry-dock. Standing behind the counter with her back turned to me was the oncoming cashier. I walked around to see what she looked like from the front. I was captivated and immediately decided I needed to find out more about her. I got in the line that had formed at the counter. Every one in front of me was a man who chatted with her. As I said, I was on my way to work. By the time I got to the front to pay for my things, I was running late for work. So I told her, "All these other guys used up my time and now I'm running late; I'll be back tomorrow night. See you then." The next night I had her to myself for a few minutes so I asked for her phone number so I could call her up for a date. Her response was, "I don't even know you. No." A few days later I was back on day shift and I saw her manager Alice and told her what had happened. She smiled and said, "That sounds like Sandy." I told her that I would very much like to meet Sandy and would she please introduce us so I could ask her for a date. She smiled again and said she would. A week or two later I stopped by the store while Sandy & Alice were doing a shift change. I took Alice aside and asked if she would introduce us. She replied, "I will, but even though I see you here all the time, I don't know your name!" I told her I was Ben and would she please introduce us before Sandy walked out. She introduced me to Sandy and we shook hands. I then asked for her phone number and she said no. I was crushed. But I made it a point to be there every night she was working, either at the beginning or end of her midnight shift. I found out she had 2 kids and lived with her sister. I saw her walking over to a friends house with her kids Bridget, who was 7 and Anthony, 5. One night she finally said she would go out with me. I invited her over to my place to watch a movie. Since I had one of those new-fangled VCR things, I told her she could pick the movie. She said she wanted to see The Godfather. I went to every place that had a videotape rental section but couldn't find the movie. I had a copy of Raiders of the Lost Ark that I had recorded from The Movie Channel that I thought she would like. So one night in June of 1985 (I'm not entirely sure of the date) Sandy came over to my house. She showed up early while I was in the shower. Since I was in a very good mood, I had my stereo blasting rock music. Sandy knocked and when she got no answer, she went back home. When the time of our date came & went, I called her. She said she didn't think it was a good idea and said to forget it. I begged her to give me a chance and she finally said okay. The date was successful and led to a few more. She started spending more time at my place and I got along really well with Bridget and Anthony. In July I asked her to marry me and she said yes. On August 24, 1985 we got married. I've never seen The Godfather. I have intentionally avoided it when it was shown on TV or the ship. My reason has always been that if I saw it, the date would be over ... Our date ended at 6:03 AM Friday June 19, 2020. I lost my partner, my best friend, the love of my life... Rest peacefully Baby Face, my Honey Bunny.

From Michael to Grandma:
I like to walk with Grandma, her steps are short like mine. She doesn't say "now hurry up" she always takes her time. I like to walk with Grandma, her eyes see things like mine, shiny stones, a funny cloud, half hidden drop of dew. Most people have to hurry up, they do not stop and see. I'm glad that God made Grandma unrushed and young like me!
I'll miss you Grandma .... Michael, xoxo
